Originally called Church of the Holy Saviour Outside the Walls, the first church on this site was indeed outside Constantine’s city walls. What you see today, however, is a late-11th-century building.
Most of its extraordinary mosaics and frescoes date from 1312, funded by Theodore Metochites, the auditor of the imperial treasury. A mosaic above the door to the nave depicts Theodore offering the church to Christ.
Open every day except Wednesday, ticket costs 9 YTL.
